Mission Statement

Our Mission

The Dean of Students (DOS) Office is an essential component of the total student experience at the University of Connecticut. In taking a leadership role in the community building and ensuring that all students feel connected to our campus community, the DOS Office actively promotes growth experiences for students. The DOS Office assumes leadership for a variety of student life programs, establishing expectations of conduct, and maintaining consistency of policy implementation across the university community.

The Dean of Students Office accomplishes its mission by:

• providing academic support through the coordination and implementation of university policy (e.g. voluntary separations, readmissions);
• coordinating dispute resolution processes, including academic and behavioral violations of the Student Code, mediation services, and general conflict management;
• providing leadership in the development of community for students, faculty, and staff;
• assuming leadership with the Division of Student Affairs around diversity education to create a multicultural living and learning environment;
• enhancing the student experience and addressing issues of retention through ongoing assessment, interpretation, and response to changing student needs;
• educating the campus community about student demographics as well as the needs of particular student groups;
• evaluating organizational culture and advancing systemic change throughout the university;
• coordinating student development efforts (social, moral, ethical, spiritual, psychological, occupational) for the university community;
• empowering and assisting students toward development of self-advocacy skills;
• inspiring within students the responsibilities of citizenship through service to the campus and the larger community;
• coordinating the campus response to major crisis;
• supporting student life programs and services at regional campuses.
